Climatic study
The pistachio tree needs to accumulate a certain number of chilling hours during winter (temperatures below 7.2 °C) to break bud dormancy and ensure uniform budbreak and flowering. It is also crucial that late spring frosts do not occur, as these could damage the flowers and seriously affect the harvest.

PHASE 2: Land and soil preparation

Deep tillage: subsoiling and leveling
After removal, the soil is usually compacted by the passage of machinery. This is the time to carry out deep subsoiling. This operation, carried out with a subsoiler or ripper, consists of plowing the land to a depth of 80–100 cm. What do we achieve with this?

PHASE 3: Orchard design and infrastructure

Planting layout
The choice of planting layout is a strategic decision that will affect the management, mechanization, and production of the farm throughout its entire productive life. The most common layouts are:

7 x 6 meters (238 trees/ha): A wide layout, ideal for rain-fed or supplementary irrigation orchards, which allows for great tree development and facilitates the passage of all machinery.

7 x 5 meters (285 trees/ha): An intensive layout, widely used in irrigated orchards, aimed at achieving faster entry into production.

6 x 6 meters (277 trees/ha): A balanced layout, suitable for both rain-fed and irrigated conditions.

Distribution of males and females
The pistachio tree is a dioecious species, meaning there are male trees (which produce pollen) and female trees (which produce the pistachio). Pollination is anemophilous, meaning it is carried out by the wind. Therefore, the correct distribution of male trees is vital to ensure good fertilization and, consequently, a good harvest.
The standard ratio is 1 male for every 8–10 females. Male trees must be distributed homogeneously throughout the plot, ensuring that their pollen reaches all female trees. It is crucial to choose male varieties whose flowering synchronizes with that of the chosen female variety.
Irrigation system
Although the pistachio tree is drought-resistant, an irrigated orchard (even with very low water allocations of 1,500–2,500 m³/ha per year) is significantly more productive and precocious than a rain-fed one. The most efficient system is drip irrigation.
The installation of a complete drip irrigation system, including a filtration head, fertilization system (fertigation), main, secondary, and drip line pipes, can represent an investment of between €2,500 and €4,000 per hectare. This cost may increase if a storage pond or well needs to be built.
PHASE 4: Planting and early care

Plant selection

Planting process
The best time to plant is from the end of winter through to the beginning of spring, always avoiding days with frost. The process includes:
