At Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo, we have spent years dedicating ourselves body and soul to a crop we are passionate about: the pistachio. Throughout our trajectory, we have accompanied hundreds of farmers from the choice of the plant to full production, and if we have learned anything, it is that the success of an orchard is built in its first years of life. Today we want to share with you our experience and knowledge about an aspect that we consider absolutely fundamental: the fertilization plan for young pistachios during their first and second year. 🌳
These first two cycles are critical. It is the time when the tree must develop a strong root system and a robust vegetative structure that will allow it to support future harvests. A well-nourished tree from the beginning is a tree that will enter production sooner, will be more resistant to pests and diseases and, ultimately, will offer us greater orchard profitability. Conversely, a deficit or an excess of nutrients at this stage can hinder its development forever.
Many farmers, especially those starting out in this fascinating world, ask us what the magic formula for fertilization is. The reality is that there is no single recipe. Every plot is a world of its own, with its own soil type, its own climate, and its own nutrient reserves. Therefore, our first piece of advice is always the same: before planting, you must know the ground you are walking on.
The starting point: Knowing our soil 🔬
Even before acquiring the pistachio plant, the first unavoidable step is to carry out a complete soil analysis. This analysis is the map that will guide us in the fertilization strategy. We cannot fertilize blindly; it would be like trying to medicate a patient without a prior diagnosis. We could be providing nutrients that the soil already has in abundance, generating toxicities and imbalances, or, conversely, we could be ignoring severe deficiencies that will limit the growth of our plants.
A detailed soil analysis will provide us with vital information about:

Soil texture (sand, silt, clay): Determines the water and nutrient retention capacity. A sandy soil, for example, will leach (lose) nutrients more easily than a clayey one, which will condition the frequency and type of fertilizer to use.

Soil pH: The pistachio prefers soils with a slightly alkaline pH, between 7.0 and 8.0. An inadequate pH can block the assimilation of certain nutrients, even if they are present in the soil. For example, a very acidic pH can limit the availability of Phosphorus (P) and Molybdenum (Mo), while a very alkaline pH can hinder the absorption of Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn), or Zinc (Zn).

Organic Matter (O.M.): It is the heart of soil fertility. It improves structure, increases water retention capacity, favors microbial activity, and is a slow-release source of nutrients. Our goal will always be to maintain and increase organic matter levels.

Macronutrient levels: Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K). They are the pillars of plant nutrition, the ones the plant needs in the greatest quantity.

Secondary nutrient and micronutrient levels: Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), Sulfur (S), Iron (Fe), Zinc (Zn), Manganese (Mn), Copper (Cu), and Boron (B). Although needed in smaller quantities, their deficiency can be as limiting as that of a macronutrient.
With the results of this analysis in hand, we can carry out a basal dressing before planting if necessary. For example, if we have a soil poor in organic matter, we will incorporate well-composted manure or quality compost. If the pH is too acidic, we can correct it with calcareous amendments. This preliminary work is one of the best investments we can make. Fertilization plan for the first year: Foundations for the future 🌱
The first year is undoubtedly the most delicate. The pistachio plant we have just transplanted has a small and underdeveloped root system. Our main objective is not for the tree to grow very fast upwards, but to develop a powerful and deep root. A strong root is the guarantee of a well-anchored tree capable of exploring a larger volume of soil in search of water and nutrients in the future.
Basal dressing (Pre-planting):
As we mentioned, based on the soil analysis, we will carry out the basal fertilization. Generally, we focus on correcting Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) deficiencies, as well as increasing the organic matter level.

Organic Matter: We recommend incorporating between 20,000 and 40,000 kg/ha of well-composted manure. It is crucial that it is well-rotted to avoid root burns and the spread of weeds. This contribution must be well mixed with the soil in the first 30-40 cm of depth, in the area where the planting lines will go.

Phosphorus (P): This element is key for root development (rooting). Young plants need it available from the very beginning. If the analysis shows low levels, we can provide between 80 and 120 Fertilizer Units (FU) of P₂O₅ per hectare. Calcium superphosphate is a common and effective source.

Potassium (K): It is fundamental for the plant’s water regulation and resistance to frost and diseases. If necessary, we will apply between 100 and 150 FU of K₂O per hectare. Potassium sulfate is an excellent option, especially in soils prone to salinity.
This basal amendment is carried out during land preparation, weeks or even months before planting, so that the nutrients integrate well into the soil.
Top dressing (Post-planting):
Once the plant is in the ground and begins to sprout (usually in spring), the top dressing phase begins. During this first year, the undisputed protagonist is Nitrogen (N). Nitrogen is the engine of vegetative growth, essential for the formation of leaves, stems, and new branches.
However, we must be very cautious. An excess of nitrogen can be counterproductive. It can cause excessive, tender, and poorly lignified growth, making the plant more vulnerable to winter frosts and pest attacks such as aphids. In addition, an excess of vigor in the aerial part can be detrimental to root development, which is our main objective.
Our recommendation for the first year is to apply nitrogen in a very split manner, so that the plant has it available when it needs it and we minimize leaching losses.

Total Nitrogen (N) dose for the first year: We recommend applying between 150 and 250 grams of pure nitrogen per tree, distributed throughout the vegetative cycle. Careful! We are talking about pure nitrogen, not kilos of commercial fertilizer. For example, a fertilizer like 27% ammonium nitrate contains 270 grams of N for every kilo of product.

Application timing: We will start applying nitrogen when the plant shows activity, that is, with the first spring budding (normally April-May, depending on the area).

Splitting: The key is to divide the total dose into several applications. A good strategy is to apply 20% of the total dose with the first budding, 40% in late spring (June), when growth is most vigorous, and the remaining 40% in late summer (late August or early September), to favor the accumulation of reserves in the buds and wood for the following year.

Type of fertilizer: We can use quick-release nitrogen fertilizers such as calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) or calcium nitrate, applied through drip irrigation (fertigation), which is the most efficient method. If we do not have fertigation, we can apply it manually around the trunk, about 20-30 cm away so as not to damage the neck of the plant, and give a subsequent watering to incorporate it.
It is essential not to apply nitrogen in late autumn or winter. At this time, the plant enters vegetative dormancy and will not assimilate it. Late fertilization could induce untimely budding that would be very sensitive to the first frosts.
Fertilization plan for the second year: Consolidating growth 🌿
In the second year, the tree is already established. Its root system is larger and its nutrient absorption capacity has increased. The objective remains to encourage balanced vegetative growth that allows us to form the structure of the tree (the vase or the central leader, depending on the chosen training system). Nutritional needs increase, but we must remain prudent.
Generally, in the second year it is not necessary to carry out a basal dressing as intense as the pre-planting one, especially if we started from a well-prepared soil. However, a light contribution of organic matter in the crop line during the winter will always be beneficial to maintain the structure and life of the soil.
Nitrogen (N) needs increase. We also begin to pay more attention to Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) during the growth cycle, as the plant demands them in greater quantities for wood formation and general development.

Total Nitrogen (N) dose for the second year: We will increase the dose to about 350 – 500 grams of pure nitrogen per tree. The exact amount will depend on the vigor we observe in the trees. If the first year’s growth was very good (shoots of more than 60-80 cm), we can stay at the lower end of the range. If it was more discreet, we can increase it.

Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) dose: We introduce top dressing with these two elements. A good reference is to apply about half the Nitrogen dose. For example, if we apply 400 grams of N, we will provide about 200 grams of P₂O₅ and about 200 grams of K₂O per tree.

Splitting and application timing: The strategy remains the same: divide the applications to maximize efficiency.

First application (Spring budding): We can apply a balanced N-P-K fertilizer, such as a 15-15-15, or a mixture of simple fertilizers. For example, 30% of the total N, 40% of the P, and 40% of the K. Phosphorus and potassium are less mobile in the soil, so a significant application at the beginning is interesting.

Second application (Late spring – Early summer): This is the time of maximum growth. We will apply most of the nitrogen, approximately 50% of the annual total, along with 30% of the P and 30% of the K.

Third application (Late summer): We reapply the remaining nitrogen (20%) and potassium (30%) to help the plant harden off (lignify the wood) and accumulate reserves for the winter. In this last application, it is no longer as necessary to provide phosphorus.

The role of micronutrients and foliar applications 🍃
Although needed in small amounts, micronutrients are like vitamins for plants. Their deficiency can cause serious developmental problems. In pistachio cultivation, the most common deficiencies, especially in calcareous soils with high pH, are Zinc (Zn) and Iron (Fe).

Zinc (Zn): It is essential for the formation of auxins, the hormones that regulate shoot growth. Its deficiency manifests itself with smaller leaves, shorter internodes, and a “rosetting” appearance at the tips of the branches.

Iron (Fe): Essential for chlorophyll synthesis. Its deficiency causes typical iron chlorosis: young leaves turn yellow while the veins remain green.
During these first two years, it is highly recommended to make preventive foliar applications. Foliar application has the advantage that the nutrient is absorbed directly by the leaf, offering a quick and effective solution, especially when root absorption is compromised by an adverse pH.
We recommend making 2 to 3 foliar treatments during spring and summer, using a cocktail of chelated micronutrients (to ensure their assimilation), with special attention to Zinc and Iron. We can also include Boron (B), which is important for pollen tube growth in the future, and Manganese (Mn).
Another very useful tool are biostimulants, such as amino acids or seaweed extracts. Applied via foliar spray or irrigation at times of stress (after transplanting, drought, heat waves), they help the plant overcome these difficulties and maintain active growth.
The importance of organic matter and soil life 🐛
In our cultivation philosophy at Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo, we not only focus on nourishing the plant, but also on caring for and nourishing the soil. A living soil, rich in beneficial microorganisms, is a more fertile and resilient soil.
Organic matter is the food for these microorganisms. By decomposing it, they release nutrients that the plant can assimilate, improve soil structure by creating aggregates that favor aeration and water infiltration, and help regulate pH.
In addition to manure contributions, we highly recommend the practice of cover crops between the tree rows. Sowing a mixture of legumes (which fix atmospheric nitrogen for free) and grasses has multiple benefits:

They provide organic matter when mowed and left on the surface or shallowly buried.

They improve rainwater infiltration.

They create a habitat for auxiliary fauna, which will help us control pests.

They compete with unwanted weeds.
A healthy soil is the best guarantee for having healthy and productive trees.
Common mistakes to avoid when fertilizing young pistachios ⛔
Throughout our experience, we have seen certain mistakes made repeatedly. We want to share them so you can avoid them in your orchards:

Over-fertilizing: “More” is not always “better”. An excess of fertilizer, especially nitrogen, is as harmful as a deficiency. It causes weak growth, increases production costs, and can contaminate aquifers.

Fertilizing at the wrong time: Applying fertilizers when the plant does not need them (for example, in winter) is throwing money and product away. We must match fertilization to the plant’s cycle.

Placing the fertilizer too close to the trunk: Chemical fertilizers, especially in their granular form, can cause severe burns if they come into direct contact with the trunk or neck of the young plant. They must always be applied in the drip zone or at a safe distance.

Forgetting micronutrients: Focusing solely on N-P-K and neglecting micronutrients is a common mistake. A Zinc deficiency, for example, can stop tree development in its tracks.

Not adjusting fertilization to what we see in the field: The fertilization plan is a guide, not an immutable law. We must be observant. If we see that the trees have excessive vigor, we must reduce the nitrogen dose for the following year. If, on the other hand, growth is poor and there are no symptoms of disease, we probably need to increase it. Observation and adaptation are the most valuable tools of a good farmer.

Not watering after fertilizing (in dry farming): If we apply granular fertilizer and it does not rain or we do not water afterwards, the fertilizer will remain on the surface and will not reach the root zone. It is essential that it dissolves and is incorporated into the soil profile.
Establishing a pistachio orchard is a long-distance race, not a sprint. The patience and care we dedicate during these first two critical years will be the key to building a profitable and sustainable farm over time. Properly nourishing our young trees is not an expense, it is the smartest investment we can make in the future of our harvest.
