The first and most essential step is to thoroughly understand the characteristics of your land. The pistachio tree is a hardy tree, but it does have its preferences. It needs deep, well-drained soils with a pH ideally ranging between 7.0 and 8.0. It does not tolerate waterlogging, so heavy, clay-rich soils can be problematic if not properly managed with amendments or drainage systems.
We strongly recommend carrying out a complete soil analysis. Planting: The Moment of Truth
The big day has arrived. The land is prepared, the pistachio plants are waiting at the nursery, and excitement is at its peak. Planting is a task that must be carried out with care and attention to detail. A mistake at this stage can affect the tree’s early development.
When to Plant? The Ideal Time 📅
The best time to plant pistachio trees is during the dormancy period, which generally runs from late autumn (November) to early spring (March). Planting in autumn allows the roots to begin establishing themselves during winter, taking advantage of rainfall and mild soil temperatures, giving them an advantage for spring budding. Planting in late winter or early spring is also an excellent option, avoiding the harshest winter cold, although the tree will have less time to settle in before the arrival of warm weather.
We strongly advise against planting in the height of summer. Heat stress and high water demand cause the failure rate to skyrocket, jeopardizing the viability of the project.
The Planting Process, Step by Step

Digging the Holes: The holes can be dug using a mechanical auger attached to the tractor or by hand with a shovel. The hole should be generously sized, approximately 40x40x40 cm. It is important for it to be wider and deeper than the plant’s root ball so the roots find loose soil around them. When digging the hole, it is good practice to separate the topsoil (richer in organic matter) from the soil from deeper layers.

Preparing the Plant: If the plant comes in a pot or container, we must remove it very carefully to avoid damaging the root ball. It is essential to check the condition of the roots. If we notice that some roots are “spiralized” or tangled at the bottom of the pot, it is advisable to gently loosen this spiral with your fingers to encourage them to grow outward rather than continuing to circle on themselves. We should never drastically prune the roots unless one is broken or damaged!

Placing the Plant: We place the plant in the center of the hole. This is a critical point: the planting depth. The plant’s collar (the transition zone between the stem and the roots) should sit at the same level as, or slightly above, the surrounding soil level. Never bury the graft union! Light Tamping: Once the hole is filled, we lightly tamp down the soil around the plant with our feet to ensure good contact between the roots and the soil. The goal is not to compact the soil excessively, but to eliminate the largest air pockets.

Installing the Stake: It is highly recommended to place a stake next to each plant. The stake, which can be made of bamboo, treated wood, or fiberglass, will guide the tree’s growth straight during its early years and protect it from damage caused by wind or machinery. The stake is driven into the ground about 5–10 cm from the trunk, on the side of the prevailing wind, to prevent the tree from rubbing against it. We then tie the plant to the stake with elastic ties or specific binding material to avoid strangling the trunk as it thickens.

The establishment irrigation should be generous and localized. The goal is to thoroughly soak the entire volume of soil we disturbed when digging the hole. Generally, 20 to 30 liters per plant is sufficient.
Ideally, create a small basin or watering ring around the plant. This is a small earthen rim that concentrates the water exactly where it is needed, preventing it from spreading across the surface. We will fill this basin with water and let it slowly infiltrate. If the soil is very sandy and drains very quickly, a second filling may be necessary.
If the drip irrigation system has already been installed, we can use it for this first watering, leaving the emitters running long enough to deliver the required volume of water. Make sure the emitters are positioned close to the trunk.
