For example, if we buy a tractor for €60,000, we estimate that we will be able to sell it for €10,000 after 15 years, the annual depreciation quota would be:
(€60,000 – €10,000) / 15 years = €3,333.33/year

This amount of €3,333.33 would be the “expense” that we would allocate each year in our income statement, reflecting the depreciation and wear and tear that the tractor suffers from its use. In addition, manufacturers themselves usually offer estimates of the useful life of their equipment in working hours, which gives us a very valuable clue.

2. Annual Hours of Use:
A tractor that works 1,500 hours a year on a large farm is not the same as one that is used 400 hours on a smaller orchard. We must make a realistic estimate of the hours that each machine will need to perform the necessary tasks throughout the year (tillage, treatments, harvesting, etc.). A modern tractor can have a useful life of between 10,000 and 15,000 working hours. If we foresee a use of 800 hours/year, the theoretical useful life would be about 12 to 18 years.

3. Maintenance and Care:
This is a factor that depends 100% on us. 🛠️ Rigorous preventive maintenance, following the manufacturer’s instructions, can significantly extend the useful life of any machine. Oil and filter changes, periodic greasing, cleaning, and proper storage are minimal investments that protect a much larger investment. Well-cared-for equipment not only lasts longer, but also suffers fewer breakdowns, avoiding costly downtime at crucial moments like harvesting.

4. Technological Obsolescence:
The agricultural sector is constantly evolving. Every year more efficient machines emerge, which consume less fuel, are more precise thanks to GPS and telemetry, or perform tasks faster and more delicately with the tree. We must ask ourselves: at what point will our current machine, even if it works, be so inefficient compared to the new ones that it will make us lose money? Perhaps a 20-year-old tractor still starts, but if it consumes 30% more fuel and is less precise in treatments than a new one, the apparent saving of not changing it becomes a hidden cost.

  • Harvesting Shaker: The jewel in the crown in pistachio mechanization. Manual harvesting is economically and operationally unfeasible in orchards of a certain size. The shaker, attached to the tractor or self-propelled, is the key to a fast and efficient harvest.

    • Type: There are umbrella shakers (which harvest and store the nut at the same time) and clamp shakers to collect on tarps or nets. The choice depends on the planting framework and the initial investment.

    • Estimated Useful Life: Between 10 and 12 years. They are machines with many moving parts and hydraulic systems that require very specialized maintenance.

Profitability: How does machinery influence the bottom line?

This is the most obvious factor, especially in harvesting and pruning. As we mentioned, the cost of hand-harvesting a hectare of pistachios is very high.
