During autumn and winter, the pistachio tree enters a state of latency or dormancy, a necessary lethargy to survive low temperatures and prepare for vigorous spring growth. To emerge from this dormancy correctly and uniformly, the tree needs to have been exposed to a specific number of hours below a certain temperature (generally, 7 °C).

This requirement is a genetic inheritance from its origins in the areas of Central Asia, characterized by cold winters and long, hot summers. Each pistachio variety has its own requirements. Some, like Kerman, need between 800 and 1,000 chilling hours, while others more adapted to temperate climates, like Larnaka or Sirora, may have enough with less.

What happens when a winter is abnormally warm?

If the winter has been mild and the tree has not accumulated the chilling hours its genetics demand, its internal “alarm clock” does not ring correctly. The tree does not receive the clear biochemical signal to break dormancy. This translates into a series of very visible problems in spring:

It is a delicate measure that must be supervised by a qualified technician, as a poor application can damage the buds.

And then, one night, without warning, the temperature drops sharply below 0 °C. This phenomenon, known as a late or spring frost, is one of the most devastating enemies of the pistachio.

The buds, as they swell and begin to sprout, lose the cold resistance they had during winter dormancy. The water contained in their cells freezes, forming ice crystals that break the cell walls and destroy the tissues. The damage is irreversible.

Identifying frost damage

At first glance, we may not notice anything strange the day after the frost. However, as the days go by, the symptoms become evident:

  • “Burned” buds: The buds that were swollen acquire a brown or blackish color, dry out, and become brittle to the touch. They will never open.

  • Dead young shoots: If the frost catches the first already developed shoots (a few centimeters long), they will appear limp, as if cooked, and will die.

  • Selective damage: It is common to observe that the damage is not uniform throughout the orchard. The lowest areas or hollows, where cold air tends to accumulate, are usually the most affected. Also, younger and less vigorous trees are more vulnerable.

To confirm if a bud has been damaged by ice, we can make a longitudinal cut with a sharp knife. If the inside is green and turgid, it has survived. If, on the other hand, it has a brown or black color and a watery texture, the tissue is dead.

How can we defend ourselves against late frosts?

The fight against frost is a constant battle that requires prevention and, in many cases, investment.

  • Plot selection: As with chilling hours, prevention begins in planning. We must avoid planting in valley bottoms, hollows, or areas known to be “frosty.” It is preferable to choose slopes with good ventilation that allow cold air to move and not stagnate.

  • Active control systems: In areas with a high risk of frost, investing in protection systems can make the difference between having a harvest or not. The most common are:

    • Anti-frost sprinkler irrigation: It consists of constantly wetting the trees during the frost night. When passing from a liquid to a solid state, water releases heat (latent heat of freezing), keeping the surface of the buds and shoots at a temperature close to 0 °C, which is sufficient to prevent internal damage. It is a very effective method but requires large volumes of water and a well-designed installation.

    • Wind machines: Large fans that mix the air layers. During radiation frosts, a layer of warmer air is created a few meters high. These towers move that warm air downwards, increasing the temperature at tree level and preventing frost.

  • Cultural practices: Some tasks can help mitigate the effect of frosts. For example, keeping the soil bare and moist (but not waterlogged) allows it to accumulate more heat during the day and release it at night. Avoiding tillage just before a frost forecast is crucial, as disturbed and dry soil cools much faster.

  • Protective products: There are products on the market based on glycols, sugars, or bacteria that, applied preventively, can help the plant withstand slightly lower temperatures. They are not a miracle solution, but they can offer an extra degree of protection.

3. A water imbalance: neither too much, nor too little 💧

The pistachio tree is famous for its drought resistance, a quality that makes it a fantastic option for many areas of our geography. However, this resistance does not mean that it is immune to a lack of water, especially at critical moments such as budding. Nor does it tolerate excess water. Water balance is, therefore, fundamental.

Drought stress: the thirst that prevents waking up

Although the tree is dormant during the winter, its roots remain active, absorbing water and nutrients. Budding is a process that consumes an enormous amount of energy and water. The tree needs to mobilize the reserves accumulated in the roots and wood towards the buds, and for this, water is the indispensable vehicle.

If the autumn and winter have been very dry and we have not provided supplemental irrigation, the tree may reach spring in a state of water stress. The buds do not have the liquid “fuel” necessary to swell and develop.

  • Symptoms: Budding is significantly delayed. The buds appear “dry,” show no turgor, and, in severe cases, may end up dying without opening. The growth of the few shoots that emerge is weak and the leaves are small.

The danger of waterlogging: drowning to death

At the other extreme, we have excess water. A soil constantly saturated with water, whether due to excessive irrigation or poor drainage, is lethal to the pistachio tree. Roots need oxygen to breathe and perform their metabolic functions, such as absorbing water and nutrients. In a waterlogged soil, the pores are filled with water and there is no oxygen. This causes root asphyxia (anoxia).

The roots begin to die, rot, and lose their ability to feed the rest of the tree. Paradoxically, a tree with waterlogged roots shows symptoms very similar to those of drought:

  • Symptoms: The buds do not sprout or do so with extreme weakness. New leaves, if they appear, are yellowish (chlorotic) and wilt easily, even with moist soil. If we extract a root from the soil, we will see it dark in color, soft, and with an unpleasant smell of putrefaction.

Irrigation management as the key to success

The solution to both problems involves intelligent and precise water management.

  • Monitoring: We cannot irrigate “by eye.” It is essential to know the moisture status of the soil. The use of tools such as tensiometers or moisture probes provides us with objective data to decide when and how much to irrigate.

  • Winter supplemental irrigation: In dry winters, especially in young orchards, it may be necessary to apply one or two supplemental irrigations to ensure that the tree reaches spring with full water reserves.

  • Drainage: In heavy or clayey soils, it is vital to ensure good drainage. Sometimes, the solution involves making ridges or raised beds for the planting line, or even installing subsurface drainage systems in extreme cases. Sometimes, the pistachio tree has everything in its favor (chill, climate, water), but it still doesn’t sprout. In these cases, we must become detectives and look for the smallest but equally destructive culprits: pests and diseases. During late winter and early spring, when temperatures begin to rise, many of these pathogenic organisms become active, and the swollen, tender buds are their favorite delicacy.

Main enemies of the buds

  • Borers and bark beetles: Certain species of small beetles or lepidopteran larvae can pierce the buds to feed on the inside or to complete their biological cycle. The damage is lethal. When observing the bud, we will often see a small entry hole, sometimes with sawdust or excrement. When opening it, we will find it hollow and dead.

  • Aphids and other sucking insects: Although more common on already developed shoots, some aphid species can attack the buds just as they begin to open, sucking the sap and weakening them to the point of preventing their proper development.

  • Wood and bud fungi: Fungal diseases such as Botryosphaeria or Phomopsis can colonize the wood and buds during the winter, especially if the tree has suffered stress or wounds (for example, from pruning). When spring arrives, these fungi prevent the circulation of sap to the bud, which ends up dying. Sometimes a small canker or depressed area can be observed at the base of the affected bud. In very wet springs, other fungi like Botrytis can directly rot the buds and flowers.

The fight against pests and diseases should not be an indiscriminate chemical war, but an intelligent strategy that combines prevention, monitoring, and selective treatment.

  • Winter treatments: It is one of the most important practices. After leaf fall, the application of a treatment based on copper, paraffin oil, or calcium polysulfide helps to “clean” the tree, drastically reducing the population of fungi, eggs, and insect larvae that overwinter in the bark and buds. It is a preventive action of very high value.

  • Hygienic pruning: During winter pruning, it is crucial to remove all dry, damaged wood or wood with symptoms of disease. These remains must be removed from the plot and burned (if regulations allow) or properly composted to prevent them from becoming a source of inoculum. Pruning tools must be disinfected when moving from one tree to another, especially if we detect a sick one.

  • Constant monitoring: From bud swell onwards, we must walk through the orchard frequently, observing the trees closely. The use of magnifying glasses and the placement of sticky or pheromone traps can alert us to the presence of the first pests, allowing us to act before the infestation becomes widespread.

  • Specific and timely treatments: If we detect a problem, we must correctly identify the causative agent to apply the appropriate phytosanitary product (insecticide or fungicide) at the optimal time. We must always follow the recommendations of a technician and prioritize the use of active ingredients that are respectful of auxiliary fauna.

5. An empty pantry: Key nutritional deficiencies 🍽️

Spring budding is like a sprinter’s dash: it requires an explosion of energy and resources that have been carefully stored beforehand. During the previous cycle, especially in the post-harvest period, the pistachio tree is dedicated to accumulating nutritional reserves (mainly in the form of starch and amino acids) in its roots and woody parts. These reserves are the engine that drives initial growth in spring, even before the new leaves are capable of photosynthesizing efficiently.

If the tree reaches spring with an “empty pantry,” it simply will not have the strength necessary for vigorous budding.

Essential nutrients for starting

Although all nutrients are important, there are three microelements that play a starring role in budding:

  • Nitrogen (N): It is the basic component of proteins and amino acids, the “bricks” with which new tissues (shoots, leaves, flowers) are built. A nitrogen deficiency translates into weak budding and small, pale green leaves.

  • Inadequate fertilization: Not having applied a correct and balanced fertilization plan, based on the real needs of the tree and the availability of nutrients in the soil.

  • Absorption problems: Sometimes the nutrients are in the soil, but the tree cannot absorb them. This may be due to an inadequate soil pH (too acidic or too alkaline), soil compaction, or root problems (as we have seen in the point about waterlogging).
