Before planting a single tree, we must thoroughly know our canvas: the soil. As we already mentioned, a complete soil analysis is fundamental. It will not only tell us the texture and pH, but also the levels of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium…) and micronutrients (boron, zinc, iron…). This information will allow us to make a precise basal amendment, providing only what the soil needs. Correcting deficiencies or imbalances once the orchard is established is much more difficult and expensive. For example, an inadequate pH can block the absorption of certain nutrients even if they are present in the soil.

With the results of the analysis in hand, we proceed to land preparation. This generally involves deep subsoiling (at 80-100 cm) to decompact the soil and break possible plow pans. This work improves water infiltration, aeration, and facilitates deep root development, which will make the trees more resistant to drought. Wider frameworks (7 meters) in the alley allow the comfortable passage of machinery (atomizer, shaker, trailer), while the distance in the row (5 or 6 meters) seeks a balance so that the trees have space to develop without competing excessively with each other, but covering the alley to maximize sunlight interception. In dry-farmed orchards on poor soils, wider frameworks (8×6 or 7×7) are sometimes chosen.

We must also design the distribution of males and females. The pistachio tree is a dioecious species, meaning there are male trees (which produce pollen) and female trees (which produce the nut). Pollination is carried out by the wind (anemophilous), so the distribution of males is critical. The ratio is usually 1 male for every 8-10 females. Their location must be strategic, interspersed in the rows of females and oriented according to the prevailing winds during the flowering season to ensure that the pollen reaches all the female flowers.

5. The Time of Planting

With the land prepared, the irrigation installed (if applicable), and the plants selected, the big day arrives. The best time to plant is in late winter or early spring, once the risk of severe frosts has passed but before the intense heat arrives. This allows the plant to settle and begin developing new roots before facing the stress of summer.

The planting process is delicate:

  1. The hole is made at the marked point, large enough to comfortably accommodate the root ball.

  2. If the plant comes bare-root, the roots are checked and any damaged parts are pruned. If it comes in a pot, it is removed carefully so as not to break the root ball.

  3. The plant is placed in the hole, ensuring that the graft point is always between 10 and 15 cm above ground level. Burying the graft is a fatal mistake that can cause roots to emerge from the variety and the death of the rootstock.

  4. The hole is filled with the original soil, pressing gently to eliminate air pockets and ensure good contact between the roots and the soil.

This is achieved through selective pruning in winter and green pinching during spring and summer. Good training from the beginning will prevent future problems of branch breakage due to the weight of the harvest and will facilitate the entry of light and air into the tree canopy, which improves nut quality and reduces the incidence of diseases.

The control of weeds is another fundamental task. Weeds compete with young pistachio trees for water and nutrients, and can greatly delay their growth. It can be controlled by shallow mechanical tillage in the alleys and with the use of herbicides in the tree line (always carefully and using protective shields).

The irrigation during the first summers, even in orchards that will be dry-farmed in the future, is highly recommended. A few supplemental waterings can make the difference between a tree that survives and one that grows vigorously, advancing its entry into production by one or two years.

The fertilization in these early years should be moderate and focused on nitrogen to favor vegetative growth. As the tree approaches production age, the inputs will be balanced with phosphorus and potassium, key elements for flowering and nut development.
