Often, we meet farmers who, with the best of intentions and seeking to optimize their initial investment, consider acquiring uncertified plants. The argument is usually the same: an apparently lower price per plant. It seems a logical decision, a smart way to reduce costs in the earliest phase of the project. However, from our perspective as technicians and advisors, we see this decision as one of the most serious and costly mistakes that can be made. It is, in essence, a high-risk bet where what is at stake is not only the initial savings, but the complete viability and profitability of the pistachio orchard throughout its more than 50 years of productive life.

The true cost of a pistachio plant is not what is paid at the nursery. The real cost manifests itself over time, in the form of agronomic problems, production losses, unforeseen expenses and, in the worst case, the need to uproot and replant the entire plot. The same goes for rootstocks; UCB-1 is the most widespread due to its vigor and resistance, but there are others like Pistacia terebinthus (cornicabra) or Pistacia atlantica that may be more suitable for calcareous soils or extreme drought conditions.

You have calculated a 6×7 planting framework for its vigor, you have selected the Peter pollinator in the appropriate proportion (usually 10-12%), and you have planned your pruning and fertilization strategy for this variety. 5, 6, or even 7 years pass. Your trees begin to enter production and, suddenly, you observe that the nut is small, of low quality, or that the flowering time of your supposed “Kermans” does not coincide with that of your “Peter” pollinators. The result is poor pollination, minimal fruit set, and a ridiculous harvest. By the time you realize the mistake, you have lost almost a decade of work, investment, and hopes. You have invested thousands of euros in irrigation, fertilizers, phytosanitary products, pruning, and maintenance to discover that the foundations of your project were wrong from day one.

In uncertified nurseries, it is common to find plants with spiraled or “coiled” roots inside the pot. This happens when the plant has remained in a small container for too long. When transplanted to the field, these roots do not develop correctly outwards, strangling the neck of the tree and causing its death or languid and stunted development in the medium term. A subsidy can account for between 30% and 50% of the initial investment in the orchard. In the long term, having a perfectly documented orchard with all legal and sanitary guarantees is an asset that revalues your farm.

Furthermore, in the event of any serious problem arising in the orchard (for example, a massive tree mortality due to a disease of origin), having the documentation of the certified plant offers you legal coverage. You can claim against the nursery and demonstrate to the competent authorities the origin of the problem. With uncertified plants, you have no guarantee or legal basis for a possible claim. Let’s analyze the numbers. Suppose one hectare of pistachios in a 6×7 framework, which means approximately 238 trees.
