It is the moment when all the effort, investment, and care we have devoted over months comes to fruition. Poor management during these days can undo an entire year’s work. Speed is key, as pistachios must be collected at their optimal ripeness, just before the shell opens completely and the dried fruit is exposed to contamination or pests. Moreover, once harvested, they must be processed within 24 hours to prevent the formation of aflatoxins and ensure maximum quality.
This very tight time window forces us to be extremely efficient. The choice of harvesting system not only affects speed and labor costs, but also the integrity of the tree and the quality of the final product. An overly aggressive method can damage branches and flower buds, compromising production for years to come. On the other hand, a system that allows pistachios to come into contact with the ground increases the risk of contamination and reduces their commercial value.

Its name is very descriptive: it is a structure similar to an inverted umbrella that opens around the tree trunk. At the center of this umbrella, or attached to its chassis, is a vibrator.
How does it work?
The operation is very intuitive. The carrier vehicle (which can be a small tractor, a self-propelled vehicle, or even a skid steer loader) approaches the tree. The operator opens the umbrella, which surrounds the trunk, creating a catching surface that covers the entire canopy diameter. The vibrator is then activated, shaking the tree. The pistachios fall directly onto the umbrella’s tarp and, by gravity or via a brush system, are directed into an integrated storage hopper on the machine itself. Once one tree is finished, the umbrella folds up, moves to the next tree, and repeats the operation.
There are different types of umbrellas. Some vibrate the trunk directly with a clamp, in a manner similar to the previous system but on a smaller scale. Others, especially designed for younger trees or with different training forms, use branch vibrators or hooks that are applied to the main branches rather than the trunk.
