The paramount importance of pollination in pistachios

To understand the relevance of Peter, we must first understand a fundamental characteristic of the pistachio tree (Pistacia vera L.): it is a dioecious species. This means that there are “male” trees and “female” trees, and both are indispensable for production. The female trees are the ones that will produce the precious nut, but for this to happen, their flowers must be fertilized by the pollen produced by the male trees.

Unlike other crops, pollination in pistachios is carried out exclusively by the wind, a process known as anemophilous. 🌬️ Bees and other insects do not play a relevant role here. The wind is responsible for transporting the tiny pollen grains from the male flowers to the female ones. Therefore, the synchronization between the male’s pollen emission and the receptivity of the female flower is the most determining factor in achieving good fruit set. If this time window does not coincide, production will be zero or very scarce, no matter how much we have cared for and pampered our female plants.

This is where the first great virtue of the Peter pistachio lies: its extraordinary ability to synchronize with the main commercial female varieties. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, let’s first delve into who this magnificent pollinator really is.

Who is Peter? Getting to know the pollinator par excellence

The Peter pistachio is a male variety selected in California, United States. Its origin dates back to the genetic improvement program developed by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) at the Chico station. It was selected for its outstanding characteristics as a pollen donor, standing out not only for the quantity and quality of its pollen, but, as we have already mentioned, for its wide and prolonged flowering period.

Visually, a Peter tree is very similar to other pistachio varieties. It is a vigorous tree, with an erect bearing and good development. However, its main value does not lie in its appearance, but in its biological function. Its flowers, grouped in panicles, are responsible for producing a huge amount of viable pollen, ready to be transported by the wind and fulfill its fertilizing mission.

Its reliability has made it the gold standard against which all other pollinators are compared.

Compatibility: The perfect dance partner for Kerman

If Peter is the king of pollinators, Kerman is, without a doubt, the queen of producing varieties. Kerman is the most widely planted female variety worldwide and the preferred one in most new orchards in Spain due to its excellent size and organoleptic quality. And the reason for this successful pairing is their perfect floral compatibility.

Peter’s flowering overlaps almost perfectly with the receptivity period of Kerman’s flowers. Generally, Peter begins to release pollen a few days before Kerman’s flowers are fully receptive and continues to do so throughout its flowering window. This overlap ensures that, regardless of the climatic conditions of each year (which can slightly advance or delay flowering), there is always Peter pollen available in the environment when Kerman needs it most.

This synchrony is vital. A female pistachio flower is receptive for a very short period, just a few days. If there is no viable pollen in the air during that time, the flower will not be fertilized and will simply dry up and fall off. Peter minimizes this risk thanks to its prolonged and abundant pollen emission. It’s like having pollination insurance on our farm. 💯

Although Kerman is its best-known partner, Peter’s versatility allows it to be a good pollinator for other intermediate or late-flowering female varieties, such as Larnaka or Sirora under certain conditions, although it is always crucial to study the behavior of the varieties in the specific growing area. And what about other male varieties? Peter vs. C-Especial and Guerrero

Although Peter is the most widely used, it is not the only male pollinator available. Other varieties such as C-Especial or the more recent Guerrero are also used in orchards. What are the differences between them?

  • C-Especial: It is another classic pollinator, also of Californian origin. Its flowering is slightly earlier than Peter’s. In many orchards, it is used as a complement to Peter. The strategy consists of planting a majority of Peter (approximately 80-90% of the males) and a small percentage of C-Especial (10-20%). In this way, the total pollen emission period on the farm is further extended. C-Especial ensures pollination in case the females’ flowering is advanced due to atypical weather conditions, while Peter covers the peak and the end of flowering. It is a diversification strategy that reduces risks.

  • Guerrero: It is a more recent acquisition, selected in Italy. Its main characteristic is an even later flowering than Peter’s. Its use in combination with Peter is being studied to pollinate very late-flowering female varieties or to ensure fertilization in cold, long springs where flowering can be extended longer than normal. However, its implementation is still a minority compared to the Peter/C-Especial tandem.

From our perspective at Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo, the combination of Peter as the main pollinator with a small percentage of C-Especial is the safest and most proven formula to guarantee excellent pollination in Kerman orchards. It offers a very wide pollination window and great resilience against annual climatic variations.

Orchard design: How many Peters do I need and where do I place them?

This is one of the questions our clients ask us most when planning their operation. The proportion and distribution of pollinators is a critical factor that should not be taken lightly. An incorrect design can drag down the profitability of the orchard throughout its useful life.

Male:Female Ratio

The standard and most widespread ratio is 1 male for every 8 or 9 females. This translates to approximately 11-12% male trees in the orchard. In usual planting frameworks (such as 6×6 or 7×5 meters), this usually equates to planting a male in the center of a square formed by 8 females.

Can this ratio be reduced? We do not recommend it. Skimping on pollinators is one of the most expensive mistakes that can be made. An insufficient amount of pollen in the environment will directly result in a lower percentage of fruit set.

And increase it? In some situations, it can be beneficial. In very windy areas, where pollen can quickly disperse outside the farm, or in plots with irregular shapes or with plant barriers, increasing the ratio to 1 male for every 7 females (approximately 14%) can be a good safety measure.

Distribution in the plot

The distribution must be as homogeneous as possible so that the pollen reaches all the female flowers in the orchard. The most common and effective system is the “quincunx” or “square” system:

  • Square system: A male is planted in a fixed position within a block of females. For example, in a 3×3 tree framework, the central tree would be a male. This is systematically repeated throughout the plot. The most classic arrangement is to replace every third tree in every third row with a male.

  • Reinforcement on the borders: The prevailing wind plays a crucial role. It is essential to reinforce the presence of males on the borders of the plot from where the dominant wind blows during the spring. Planting a complete row of males on that edge (or at least reinforcing their presence) acts as a pollen-producing barrier that will impregnate the entire orchard when the wind blows in the right direction. 💨

Specific management of the Peter Pistachio: Care for a champion

The Peter pistachio is not a tree that we can plant and forget. For it to fulfill its function perfectly, it requires specific management, in some aspects different from that of the females. A healthy, vigorous, and well-formed pollinator will produce more and better pollen.

Pruning the male

The objective of pruning a male tree is radically different from that of a female tree. In females, we look for a structure that facilitates the entry of light and air for good production and ripening of the nut. In the male, the objective is to maximize the production of flowers and, therefore, of pollen, and achieve a structure that facilitates its dispersal by the wind.

  • Training pruning: During the first years, training is similar to that of females, seeking a vase structure with 3 or 4 well-distributed main branches. However, we will look for greater height and a more erect bearing. A male taller than the females surrounding it will disperse its pollen more efficiently.

  • Production pruning: Once the tree enters production, pruning should be very light. Unlike females, where branches are removed to favor the year’s growth, in males we want to keep the maximum number of flower buds. The wood that has flowered one year will do so again in subsequent years. Therefore, pruning will be limited to removing dry, broken, or crossing branches that hinder aeration. A dense canopy with a large number of floral clusters is sought. The goal is to create a “pollen factory”. 🏭

Fertilization and irrigation

The nutritional needs of males are slightly different from those of females. Since they do not have to fill nuts, their potassium (K) needs are lower. However, for good flowering and pollen production, they require adequate levels of nitrogen (N) for good vegetative development, and phosphorus (P) and zinc (Zn) for pollen viability.

It is a common mistake to fertilize males with the same pattern as females or, worse still, to leave them to their own devices. We recommend performing specific foliar analyses on male trees to adjust the fertilization plan to their specific needs.

Regarding irrigation, although the pistachio tree is drought-resistant, severe water stress, especially in the period prior to and during flowering, can negatively affect the quantity and quality of pollen. Males must receive the same irrigation regime as females to ensure they reach flowering in an optimal water state.

Keys to successful fertilization: Synchronizing the orchestra

Even with the best pollinators and a perfect planting design, there are factors that can influence the success of fertilization. As farmers, we must know them and, as far as possible, act to mitigate them.

The climatic factor

The weather during flowering is the most uncontrollable factor and, at the same time, one of the most influential.

  • Rain: Rain during flowering is the worst enemy of pollination. 🌧️ Water clumps the pollen, preventing the wind from transporting it. In addition, it can “wash” the stigmas of the female flowers, leaving them non-receptive. Persistent rains during peak flowering can be catastrophic for that year’s harvest.

  • Wind: We need wind for the pollen to travel, but excessive wind (above 25-30 km/h) can be counterproductive, as it disperses the pollen too quickly and blows it away from the orchard. Soft and constant breezes are ideal. The total absence of wind is also a problem, as the pollen will not move.

  • Temperatures: Extremely low temperatures (late frosts) can damage both male and female flowers. On the other hand, anomalous and sudden heat can drastically shorten the receptivity period of the female flower, desynchronizing it with pollen emission.

  • Humidity: Very high relative humidity (close to 100%) hinders pollen dispersal, similar to rain. Conversely, an extremely dry environment can dehydrate the female stigmas, reducing their receptivity period.

Artificial or assisted pollination: an ace up the sleeve

In years with adverse weather forecasts during flowering (persistent rains, calm winds), or in young orchards where males do not yet produce enough pollen, artificial pollination can be a tool to save or improve the harvest.

This technique consists of collecting pollen from male flowers (it can be purchased or collected from the trees themselves in the days prior to the rain), preserving it properly, and applying it to the female flowers at the optimal time using dusters or atomizers.

Although it entails an additional cost and requires careful planning, it can make the difference between a poor harvest and an acceptable one in climatically complicated years. Surveillance and monitoring

It is essential to visit the orchard frequently during the flowering period (which usually occurs between late March and April, depending on the area and the year). We must observe if the opening of the male flowers coincides with that of the female ones. We can check pollen viability by gently shaking a panicle of male flowers over a dark surface (like a mobile phone screen); if it releases a small cloud of yellowish dust, everything is going well. ✅

This monitoring allows us to detect possible synchronization problems in time and, if necessary, propose measures such as assisted pollination.

The future: Are there alternatives to Peter?

Research in the pistachio world is constant. New varieties, both female and male, continue to be sought and selected that better adapt to different climatic conditions, are more resistant to diseases, or offer improved production characteristics.

In the field of pollinators, work is being done to find varieties with different flowering dates (earlier or later) to be able to pollinate new female varieties or to offer greater guarantees in areas with variable climates. Varieties like ‘Randy’, earlier than Peter, or the aforementioned ‘Guerrero’, later, are examples of this search for diversification.

However, today and for the combination with the Kerman variety, the Peter pistachio remains the safest, most reliable, and most profitable bet. Its prolonged flowering period, the abundance and quality of its pollen, and the decades of experience that guarantee its good performance keep it on the throne of pollinators.
