“I have always liked to keep up with new trends in agriculture,” Ricardo tells us with a kind smile and a look full of pride towards his plantations. “When I started researching pistachios, I realized the enormous potential this nut had. The Interview: Unveiling the Secrets of Pistachio Success 🗣️
Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo: Ricardo, thank you so much for welcoming us to your plantation and sharing your experience with us! It is a true pleasure to learn firsthand about your success story in pistachio cultivation.
Ricardo: The pleasure is mine. It is always a pleasure to talk about my passion, which is pistachios, and share what I have learned with other farmers. I hope my experience can be useful and inspiring for many.
Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo: To start, we would like to know what motivated you to bet on pistachio cultivation and how your beginnings in this sector were.
Ricardo: Well, my main motivation was the profitability of the plantation. As a farmer, I am always looking for crops that are profitable in the long term and adapt well to our climatic conditions. Pistachio seemed like a very interesting option due to its high market demand and growing value.
My beginnings were, as I said before, a bit challenging. I had no previous experience in pistachio cultivation, so I had to inform myself a lot, read, attend courses, and, above all, seek expert advice. I remember spending a lot of time researching different varieties, planting techniques, irrigation, pruning… It was a new world for me!
Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo: And in that learning process, what role did Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo play in your project?
Ricardo: Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo was fundamental from the beginning. When I decided I was going to bet on pistachios, the first thing I did was contact you. I had heard very good things about the quality of your pistachio plants and your technical advice. And the truth is, you didn’t let me down.
I remember you helped me choose the most suitable varieties for my land and climate, gave me very valuable advice on soil preparation, planting, irrigation… Your experience was crucial to avoid mistakes and start off on the right foot. Furthermore, you have always been available to answer my questions and offer support services when I needed them.
Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo: We are very happy to hear that our collaboration was so positive for you. Could you tell us a little more about planning your plantation? How much area did you plant, which varieties did you choose, and why?
Ricardo: I started with an area of 10 hectares. I wanted to start small, to learn and adapt to the crop. Regarding varieties, following your recommendations, I mainly chose the Larnaka variety as the female variety and Peter as the male pollinator variety.
I really liked the Larnaka variety for its high productivity, the quality of its nut, and its good adaptation to our area. And the Peter variety is an excellent pollinator, with flowering that coincides very well with that of Larnaka. The combination of these two varieties has been key to achieving good production and effective pollination.
Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo: We understand that the choice of varieties is a crucial factor for the success of a pistachio plantation. What other aspects do you consider fundamental in the early stages of planting?
Ricardo: Without a doubt, soil preparation is fundamental. Pistachios need well-drained, deep soil with good organic matter content. Before planting, I performed a soil analysis to know its characteristics and correct possible deficiencies. I added organic matter, performed deep tillage to break up compaction, and ensured good drainage.
Another key aspect is planting itself. It is important to choose the right planting framework, make holes with the correct dimensions, and plant the plants carefully, ensuring good contact between roots and soil. It is also fundamental to perform good planting irrigation to encourage plant establishment.
Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo: Once the plantation is established, what are the most important cares and management practices pistachios require?
Ricardo: Pistachio is quite a hardy and resistant crop, but it requires certain cares to ensure good production. Irrigation is fundamental, especially in the early years and during periods of high water demand, such as flowering and nut filling. I use drip irrigation, which allows me to optimize water use and provide nutrients efficiently.
Fertilization is also important, although pistachios are not a very demanding crop in terms of nutrients. I perform foliar analysis periodically to know the nutritional needs of my plantations and adjust fertilization accordingly. I use organic and mineral fertilizers, seeking a balance between both.
Pruning is another fundamental management practice. I perform formative pruning in the early years to shape the tree and favor its structure. And then I perform production pruning to maintain the balance between vegetative growth and nut production, and to favor canopy aeration and lighting.
Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo: Regarding pests and diseases, have you had many problems in your plantation? What strategies do you use for control?
Ricardo: Fortunately, pistachio is a crop quite resistant to pests and diseases. In my plantation, the most common problems I’ve had have been the pistachio psyllid and the bark beetle. For their control, I use integrated pest management strategies, prioritizing preventive measures and biological control.
I perform phytosanitary treatments only when strictly necessary and using environmentally friendly products that respect auxiliary fauna. Constant monitoring of plantations is fundamental to detect problems in time and act effectively.
Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo: And speaking of harvesting, how do you harvest pistachios in your plantation? What techniques do you use for nut processing?
Ricardo: We harvest pistachios at the end of summer when the nut is ripe and the outer hull easily separates. We use the tree vibration technique, which is very efficient and allows us to harvest a large amount of nuts in a short time.
Once harvested, the pistachio goes through a cleaning, hulling, drying, and sizing process. Drying is a crucial process to guarantee nut quality and preservation. I use hot air dryers, controlling temperature and humidity to avoid overdrying or mold appearance. Then, the nut is calibrated by size and stored in optimal conditions until marketing.
Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo: Ricardo, your plantation is an example of success in pistachio cultivation. What would you say have been the keys to achieving these results?
Ricardo: I think there have been several keys to success. First, choosing good plant material and technical advice from Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo. Starting with quality plants and having expert support from the beginning is fundamental.
Second, dedication and constant effort. Pistachio cultivation requires time, work, and attention to detail. You have to be aware of the needs of the plantations, perform proper management at each stage, and not let your guard down.
Third, innovation and adaptation. Agriculture is constantly evolving, and it is important to be aware of new techniques, new varieties, and new technologies. I have always tried to stay updated and adapt my plantation to the latest trends.
And last but not least, passion for pistachios. When you do things with passion and enjoy what you do, results eventually come. I love pistachios, I love working in my plantations and seeing how these wonderful nuts grow and produce.
Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo: Undoubtedly, passion is a fundamental ingredient in any project. Finally, what advice would you give to those farmers who are thinking of starting a pistachio plantation?
Ricardo: My main advice is to get well informed before starting. Research pistachio cultivation, visit plantations, talk to experienced producers, and seek advice from experts like Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo.
Make a good study of your land and climate to choose the most suitable varieties. Plan the plantation well and do not skimp on soil preparation and plant quality.
Be patient and persevering. Pistachio is a long-term crop that takes a few years to start producing significantly. But with dedication and effort, results eventually come, and plantation profitability is very interesting.
And above all, enjoy the process. Pistachio cultivation is exciting, and seeing our plantations grow and produce is a great satisfaction. I encourage everyone to take the step and discover the wonderful world of pistachios! 👏
Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo: Ricardo, thank you very much for your valuable advice and for sharing your inspiring story with us. It has been a true pleasure meeting you and learning from your experience.
Ricardo: The pleasure has been mine. And thank you for your support and professionalism. Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo is a fundamental ally for any pistachio producer.
