Key Factors to Consider Before Defining the Planting Layout

Before picking up the tape measure and starting to mark out the land, it is essential to carry out a thorough analysis of a series of factors that are unique to each project. There is no “universal planting layout” that works for everyone. The ideal choice is always a tailored solution, crafted from the precise data of our farm and our goals.

1. The Vigor of the Variety and Rootstock: Genetics Rule 🌱

The combination of the rootstock and the variety we are going to graft onto it is the first element to consider. Not all rootstocks behave the same way. For example, Pistacia terebinthus (Terebinth) is known to be a very hardy rootstock, well adapted to poor soils and strict dryland conditions, but it confers lower vigor and a slower entry into production. On the other hand, rootstocks such as UCB-1, a hybrid of Pistacia atlantica x Pistacia integerrima, are extremely vigorous, with very rapid development and an early entry into production, but they require better soils and, above all, the availability of irrigation.

A vigorous variety on a vigorous rootstock, such as Kerman on UCB-1, will develop a much larger canopy in less time than, for example, a less vigorous variety such as Larnaka on a Terebinth rootstock. Therefore, the first combination will require a much wider planting layout to prevent the trees from competing with each other for light and resources within just a few years. Failing to consider this factor is mortgaging the future of the orchard. 2. Soil and Climate Characteristics: The Playing Field ☀️🌧️

The soil is what sustains our trees. Its depth, texture (clay, silt, sand), fertility, and water retention capacity are all decisive factors. In deep, fertile soils with good water availability, pistachio trees will show greater vegetative development, which calls for wider layouts. Conversely, in poorer, stonier soils or those with depth limitations, development will be more contained, allowing for somewhat tighter planting layouts.

Climate also plays a crucial role. The number of hours of direct sunlight, annual rainfall and its distribution, average temperatures, and late frosts all influence tree growth. Areas with high sun exposure and optimal conditions will allow for greater development, while more limiting climates will restrict vigor.

3. Water Availability: Rainfed or Irrigated? 💧

This is perhaps the most decisive factor. The difference in development between a rainfed pistachio tree and an irrigated one is enormous.

4. The Mechanization Model: Thinking About the Future 🚜

Pistachio farming is a crop that requires a high degree of mechanization to be profitable, especially on operations of a certain size. Pruning, phytosanitary treatments, soil management, and above all, harvesting, are carried out with specific machinery. The orchard design must be governed by the dimensions and requirements of this machinery.

It is crucial to think about the tractor, the sprayer, and above all the trunk shaker with inverted catching umbrella that we will use for harvesting. The width of the rows (the larger spacing in rectangular layouts) must allow for the comfortable and safe passage of this machinery, including turns at the headlands. A row that is too narrow can prevent the use of an efficient shaker, forcing the use of manual methods or less productive machinery, which would drive up harvesting costs and reduce profitability. A spacing of 7 meters between rows is usually a standard that allows work with most shaker models on the market.

Types of Planting Layouts and Their Implications

Once the above factors have been analyzed, we can begin to evaluate the different types of planting layouts. The choice will depend on how we balance these factors in our particular equation.

Traditional or Extensive Layouts

These are the widest layouts, historically used in rainfed orchards.

In our experience, for the rainfed conditions found across most of the Iberian Peninsula, a 7×7 meter layout represents a very interesting balance between water resource management and long-term productivity. It allows trees to develop a strong root system and a well-formed canopy without entering into direct competition.

Intensive or Semi-Intensive Layouts

These layouts aim to increase tree density per hectare to speed up the return on investment and maximize production in the early years. They are almost exclusively used in irrigated orchards.

The choice of an intensive layout should not be taken lightly. It requires a firm commitment to high-precision agronomic management. It is a “sprint” strategy at the start, compared to the “long-distance race” that a more traditional layout represents. Distribution of Males and Females: A Pollination Matter 🐝

The pistachio is a dioecious species, meaning there are male trees (which produce pollen) and female trees (which produce the nut). Pollination occurs via wind (anemophilous), so the correct distribution of males within the orchard is vital to ensure good fertilization of the female flowers and, therefore, a good harvest.

The standard ratio we recommend is 1 male for every 8-10 females. A lower ratio may leave flowers unfertilized, while a higher ratio is inefficient, as the males occupy space that could otherwise be productive.

The distribution of these males within the planting layout is equally important. The goal is for pollen to be distributed as evenly as possible across the entire plot. A classic and highly effective scheme is to place the male at the center of a square of 8 females, as follows (F = Female, M = Male):

In an orchard, this translates into replacing one female with a male in alternating rows, with a certain offset so that the distribution is even. For example, in row 1, the male occupies position 3; in row 3, it occupies position 6; in row 5, it returns to position 3, and so on. It is also very important to place a row of males along the orchard edges that receive the prevailing winds during the flowering period (generally spring) to create a “pollen barrier” that covers the entire farm from the outset.

Synchronizing flowering is also crucial. There are different male varieties (Peter, C-Especial, Guerrero…) with slightly different flowering times. It is essential to choose male varieties whose flowering overlaps perfectly with that of our main female variety (Kerman, Larnaka, Sirora…). Using at least two male varieties with slightly different flowering periods (one earlier and one later) is an excellent strategy to ensure pollination even in years with weather-challenged springs.

Common Mistakes in Orchard Design That We Must Avoid

Throughout our career, we have seen recurring mistakes made during the design phase that are later very difficult, if not impossible, to correct. We want to highlight them so you can avoid them:

  1. “Copying and Pasting” the Neighbor’s Layout: Every farm is its own world. Soil conditions, orientation, water access, and the farmer’s goals are unique. What works for the neighbor may not be optimal for us. A personalized, individual analysis is essential.

  2. Being Overly Optimistic About Water in Rainfed Conditions: Planting a dense layout under rainfed conditions in the “hope” that it will rain more in the future is a fatal mistake. The design must be based on the area’s historical rainfall reality, not on wishes.

  3. Underestimating Vigor Under Irrigation: Unlike with rainfed conditions, the mistake under irrigation is choosing too tight a layout. A 6×5 m layout with UCB-1 and abundant irrigation can turn into an impenetrable jungle within 8-10 years, with production dropping drastically due to shading. It is better to err on the side of a slightly wider layout and encourage production throughout the entire canopy.

  4. Forgetting About Machinery: Designing the orchard without a clear idea of which shaker or sprayer will be used is a beginner’s mistake. We must measure the machinery and leave rows and headlands wide enough for comfortable, safe maneuvering. A few extra centimeters in planning can save a lot of money and headaches in the future.

  5. Poor Male Tree Planning: Planting too few males, distributing them irregularly, or choosing varieties that do not synchronize well with the females are mistakes that come at a high cost in the form of low yields (a high percentage of empty pistachios).

Long-Term Planning: Can a Planting Layout Be Changed?

Correcting a planting layout once established is a monumental, costly task that often yields mediocre results.

If the layout is too dense, the only viable solution is the systematic removal of trees. For example, in a very dense layout, one could choose to remove one out of every three full rows, or every other tree within the same row. This is a painful decision, as it involves uprooting trees in which we have invested time and money. Furthermore, the resulting layout is usually irregular and inefficient.

If the layout is too wide, there is no real solution. One might consider planting a new tree between the existing ones, but this new tree would suffer enormous competition from the already-established trees (larger and with a developed root system), and its growth would be very poor.

For all these reasons, we insist: the planting layout decision is for the entire life of the operation. This is the time to invest in analysis, planning, and consultation with experts.
