The choice between a Central Leader or Modified Vase system should not be taken lightly, as each presents advantages and disadvantages that will adapt differently to the specific conditions of each farm, the available machinery, and the production objectives of each farmer. The Modified Vase Pruning System: Tradition and Adaptability

The Vase pruning system, in its different variants, is perhaps the most traditional and recognized in many pistachio-producing regions of the world. At Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo, we have worked with this system for many years and thoroughly know its particularities. The main objective of the Modified Vase is to form a tree without a dominant central leader, opening the canopy by selecting 3 to 4 main branches (or scaffolds) that start from a relatively low point on the trunk, generally between 60 and 90 centimeters from the ground.

Formation of the Modified Vase

The construction of this structure begins in the first years of the tree’s life. After planting, during the first or second year, the seedling is headed at the desired height. From the shoots that emerge below the cut, we will select the 3 or 4 best arranged, seeking a radial distribution, like the spokes of a wheel, to guarantee structural balance and homogeneous sun exposure. These will be the pillars of our future tree.

In subsequent years, training pruning will focus on lengthening these main branches and selecting secondary branches on them, always keeping the interior of the canopy clear. The goal is for light to penetrate to the innermost parts of the tree, which is fundamental for the correct differentiation of flower buds and, therefore, for production. Once the tree reaches its final structure, we move on to production pruning, whose objective is to maintain the balance between vegetative growth and nut production, remove dry or diseased wood, and ensure a good renewal of fruiting formations.

Advantages of the Modified Vase System

• Excellent Light Penetration and Aeration ☀️: The open structure of the vase is its greatest virtue. By not having a central leader that shades the lower parts, sunlight reaches practically the entire leaf surface of the tree. This not only improves the quality of the nut, but also creates a microclimate less favorable for the development of fungal diseases, such as Botryosphaeria, which thrive in high humidity and shaded conditions.

• Ease of Harvesting (Manual and Semi-mechanized) 💪: The contained height of trees trained in a vase greatly facilitates harvesting tasks, especially if done manually or with smaller trunk shakers. The operator can access a large part of the production from the ground or with small ladders, which can reduce harvesting costs and times.

• Adaptability to Wide Planting Frameworks: Historically, this system has been associated with more traditional and wider planting frameworks (7×7 meters or 7×6 meters), allowing for great individual development of each tree. It is a very robust option for farms where high density is not sought.

• Good Production per Tree: A well-trained tree in a Modified Vase, with its main branches well developed, can reach very high individual productions once it enters full production. Its large, well-lit productive surface is capable of supporting a considerable load of nuts.

Disadvantages and Considerations of the Modified Vase

• Slower Entry into Production: The formation of the vase structure requires more severe training pruning in the early years. These significant cuts delay entry into production compared to other systems. We are talking about the first relevant harvest being delayed by one or two years.

• Greater Susceptibility to Wind and Load Damage: The structure with several main branches starting from the same point can be mechanically weaker. In years of very abundant harvest or in areas with strong winds, the crotches (insertion points of the main branches to the trunk) can suffer breakage if the load has not been managed correctly or if the insertion angles are too narrow.

• Difficulties for Integral Mechanization (Harvesting with Inverted Umbrella) 🚜: Although it facilitates semi-mechanized harvesting, the low and open structure can complicate the use of large-format harvesting machinery, such as shakers with inverted umbrellas. Low branches can interfere with the positioning and sealing of the umbrella, causing nut losses during harvest.

• Greater Need for Pruning Labor: Maintenance pruning in a well-formed vase requires qualified personnel who understand the dynamics of the tree. It is necessary to make numerous thinning and renewal cuts each year to keep the interior clear and balance production, which can entail a higher labor cost.

From our perspective at Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo, we recommend the Modified Vase for orchards that do not seek ultra-early entry into production, that are located in areas with a lower risk of strong winds, and where harvesting will be done manually or with backpack or trunk shakers without umbrellas. It is a system that, well managed, provides excellent and stable long-term productions.

The Central Leader Pruning System: Modernity and Efficiency

The Central Leader training system is a more modern approach to olive growing and, by extension, has been adapted with great success to pistachios. At Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo, we have been pioneers in the implementation and recommendation of this system for new high-density orchards, as it aligns perfectly with total mechanization and the search for precocity.

This system is based on maintaining a single trunk or vertical axis from the ground to the apex of the tree. Along this axis, tiers of productive branches are distributed, generally in a spiral, seeking a conical or pyramidal structure.

Formation of the Central Leader

Formation is, in a way, more intuitive than that of the vase. After planting, the vertical growth of the seedling is guided. Pruning is limited to removing suckers and branches that compete directly with the central leader and selecting, at different heights, the branches that will form the productive tiers. The goal is for the branches of the lower tiers to be longer than those of the upper ones, creating that “Christmas tree” shape that ensures light reaches all productive strata.

The first main branch is usually left at a higher height than in the vase system, normally above 90-100 cm, to facilitate the passage of machinery. From there, the following branches are selected every 30-50 cm along the axis. The key is to control the vigor of the central leader so that it does not “shoot up” and depopulate the lower areas, always maintaining a balance throughout the tree.

Advantages of the Central Leader System

• Earlier Entry into Production 🚀: By requiring less severe pruning during the training phase, the tree allocates more energy to growth and flower bud differentiation. This translates into a faster entry into production. In our experimental farms, we have observed that Central Leader orchards can offer a first commercial harvest up to two years earlier than those trained in a Modified Vase, which is a first-rate economic factor.

• Perfect Adaptation to Total Mechanization 🤖: This is undoubtedly its main competitive advantage. The structure of the tree, with a clear trunk up to a considerable height and a narrower, vertical canopy, is designed for harvesting with inverted umbrella shakers. The machine can attach to the trunk quickly and efficiently, without interference from low branches, maximizing harvesting efficiency and minimizing nut loss.

• Higher Planting Density: The Central Leader allows for reduced planting frameworks. Frameworks of 6×6 meters, 6×5 meters, or even more intensive ones can be established. This means a greater number of trees per hectare (going from about 200-240 trees/ha in Vase to more than 330 trees/ha in Central Leader), which, combined with precocity, skyrockets production per hectare in the early years.

• Mechanically Stronger Structure: A single, well-lignified central axis offers greater structural resistance against strong winds and the weight of the harvest compared to the crotches of the vase system. The risk of tearing and breaking of main branches is significantly lower.

• Simpler and More Systematizable Pruning: Once the structure is formed, production pruning is easier to partially mechanize (with pre-pruners) and to teach to personnel. It mainly consists of maintaining the pyramidal shape, controlling the growth of the leader, and renewing the productive wood in the branch tiers, which can reduce long-term labor costs.

Disadvantages and Considerations of the Central Leader

• Risk of Internal Shading: If not managed correctly, the development of the upper tiers can excessively shade the lower ones. This can cause a loss of production in the lower areas of the tree and a shift of the harvest towards the higher parts, making harvesting difficult. It is crucial to perform thinning pruning to ensure light penetration.

• Greater Tree Height: Trees in a Central Leader tend to be taller. This can hinder phytosanitary treatments, which must reach the entire canopy, and some manual tasks such as fruit thinning if necessary.

• Need for More Technical Management in Training: Although production pruning can be simpler, the training phase requires precise technical control to maintain the dominance of the central leader without it choking the development of the lateral branches. Poor management in the early years can compromise the future structure of the tree.

• Potentially Higher Initial Investment: By opting for denser planting frameworks, the initial investment in plants and irrigation system per hectare is higher. However, at Agro Vivero del Mediterráneo we consider that this higher investment is more than compensated by the precocity and higher production per hectare in the long term.

Long-Term Comparative Analysis: Which System is More Efficient?

After analyzing the characteristics of each system, the key question is: which is more efficient in the long term? The answer, as good technicians that we are, is: it depends. There is no universally superior system, but rather a more suitable system for each project. Let’s analyze the key factors in a long-term perspective (20-30 years of orchard life).

Accumulated Production (Kg/Ha)

• First 10-12 years: In this phase, the Central Leader is the clear winner. Its precocity and higher density of trees per hectare allow it to reach significantly higher accumulated production figures. While a Vase orchard is still developing its structure, the Central Leader orchard has already completed several major commercial harvests. This advance in cash flow is a decisive factor for the economic viability of many projects.

• From year 12-15 (Full Production): Here the differences narrow. A well-formed and fully mature Modified Vase tree can have a higher individual production than a Central Leader tree. However, having fewer trees per hectare, the total production per area tends to equalize. Our measurements indicate that a well-managed Vase orchard can reach per-hectare productions similar to those of a Central Leader in this maturity phase.

• Accumulated Production at 30 years: If we project the useful life of the orchard, the Central Leader usually maintains a slight advantage in total accumulated production thanks to its spectacular performance in the early years. The initial advantage is so great that, although annual production equalizes at maturity, the overall calculation remains favorable to the Central Leader.

Operating Costs

• Pruning Cost: Initially, the training cost may be similar. However, in the long term, Central Leader pruning, being more systematizable and potentially mechanizable, tends to be cheaper per hectare. Vase pruning requires more time and more qualified personnel.

• Harvesting Cost: Here the difference is abysmal. Mechanized harvesting with an inverted umbrella in a Central Leader orchard is much faster and more efficient, drastically reducing costs per kilogram harvested. In the Vase, manual or semi-mechanized harvesting involves a much higher labor cost, which can become one of the main expenses of the farm.

• Cost of Phytosanitary Treatments: The Vase, with its open canopy, can facilitate treatment coverage. However, the orderly structure of the Central Leader allows for a more efficient advance of application machinery. In general terms, costs do not vary drastically if the equipment is appropriate for each system.

Nut Quality and Tree Longevity

Regarding quality (size, split percentage, absence of stains), we have not found significant differences attributable to the pruning system, as long as both are well managed. Good lighting and nutrition are more determining than the shape of the tree itself. If a Central Leader is shaded due to poor management, quality in the lower areas will decrease, just as it will in a Vase whose interior is not thinned correctly.

Regarding longevity, both systems are perfectly viable for the entire productive life of the pistachio tree. The key lies in adequate renewal pruning that prevents premature aging of the wood and in avoiding large pruning wounds that can be a gateway to wood diseases. The greater structural resistance of the Central Leader could give it a slight advantage in areas highly exposed to inclement weather.

The reasons are fundamentally economic and managerial:

• Profitability: Precocity in entering production drastically shortens the return on investment period. Being able to obtain significant income from the fifth or sixth year instead of the seventh or eighth completely changes the financial landscape of the project.

• Harvesting Efficiency: In a context of rising labor costs and a shortage of field personnel, mechanization is not an option, it is a necessity. The Central Leader is designed by and for mechanized harvesting, which guarantees the long-term viability of the farm.

• Soil Optimization: The possibility of increasing density allows obtaining more kilograms per hectare, optimizing the use of a resource as valuable as land.

However, the Modified Vase system remains an excellent and totally valid option in certain scenarios:

• Small family farms where labor is not a limiting factor and manual harvesting will be carried out.

• Farms with already established and wide planting frameworks that are not to be modified.

• Farmers with a lot of previous experience in this system in other woody crops, such as olive or almond trees, who feel more comfortable with its management.

• Areas with very high insolation where the risk of sunburn on the leader and main branches could be a problem if not properly whitewashed.
