We have accompanied hundreds of farmers from the choice of the ideal pistachio plant to full production, and if we have learned anything in all this time, it is that there is a critical period that defines the success and future profitability of an orchard: the years from the third to the seventh. It is a stage we like to call the “adolescence” of the tree. It is no longer a young and fragile plant, but it has not yet reached its productive maturity. It is the time to forge the foundations of what will be a healthy, strong, and above all, highly productive orchard.
Many farmers focus intensely on the first two years, which is fundamental, but often relax their attention from the third year onwards, just when the tree begins to have exponential nutritional demands. A mistake in the fertilization strategy at this stage can delay entry into production, reduce the first harvests, and weaken the tree for its adult life. Conversely, a meticulous fertilization plan, custom-designed and executed with precision, can cause what we like to call an “explosive entry into production.” 🚀
In this article, we are going to share with you our accumulated experience and knowledge on how to design and execute the perfect fertilization plan for your pistachio trees between the third and seventh year. We are going to break down the nutritional needs year by year, the importance of each element, the most efficient application methods, and how to interpret the signals that the trees themselves send us. The key transition: From vegetative growth to preparation for production (Year 3)
Upon reaching the third year, our pistachio trees have overcome the most vulnerable phase of their development. They already have a more or less formed woody structure and a root system that eagerly explores the soil. However, the main objective in this year is still vegetative growth. We need to form a tree with a well-open vase structure, with strong and well-distributed main branches that can support the weight of future harvests. But, attention! 🧐 It is in this year that we begin to lay the foundations for floral induction the following year.
Soil and foliar analysis: Our eyes underground and on the tree
Before applying any type of fertilizer, the first unavoidable step is to know where we are starting from. A complete soil analysis carried out at the end of winter will give us an X-ray of the availability of nutrients in our plot. But we don’t stop there. From the third year onwards, it is essential to start carrying out foliar analyses in mid-July. Why? Because the foliar analysis tells us what the tree is actually eating, not what it has available on the “plate” (the soil). The combination of both analyses is the most powerful diagnostic tool we have at our disposal. Nutritional needs in the third year
In this phase, nitrogen (N) is still king. It is the engine of growth, essential for the formation of new leaves, shoots, and wood. However, we must begin to balance its supply with phosphorus (P) and potassium (K).

Nitrogen (N): We seek vigorous but controlled growth. An excess of nitrogen can cause excessive growth, with very long internodes and poorly lignified wood, which weakens the tree’s structure and makes it more prone to diseases. We recommend applying between 60 and 80 fertilizer units (FU) per hectare. The key is to split its application. A first contribution at the beginning of budding (March-April) and a second contribution in early summer (June) to sustain growth.

Phosphorus (P): It is the energy of the tree. Fundamental for root development (they are still growing!), energy transfer (ATP) and, very importantly, it begins to play a crucial role in the differentiation of flower buds for the following year. A contribution of between 20 and 30 FU/ha is usually sufficient if our soils are not very poor in this element.

Potassium (K): The regulator. Potassium is vital for sugar transport, water regulation (resistance to drought and cold), and wood quality. Slightly increasing its levels in this phase prepares the tree for future demands. We aim for about 50-70 FU/ha.
An example of basal dressing in winter could be the application of a balanced complex fertilizer, such as an 8-15-15, adjusting the doses according to the results of our soil analysis. The rest of the nitrogen would be applied through the irrigation system (fertigation) for maximum efficiency.
The awakening of production: Floral induction and first buds (Year 4)
The fourth year is exciting. ✨ If we have done our job well, it is very likely that we will see the first flower buds. The harvest, if any, will be token, but it is an unmistakable sign that the tree is entering the reproductive phase. Our goal now is twofold: to continue forming a good structure and, at the same time, nourish those first buds to ensure good fruit set.
The nutritional strategy becomes more complex. We are no longer just looking for growth; we are looking for a perfect balance between vegetative and reproductive development.
Adjusting the N-P-K triad

Nitrogen (N): We maintain a significant supply, but we begin to be more cautious. An excess in this phase can “send” the tree to produce wood instead of flowers. We will move in a range of 80 to 100 FU/ha. It is crucial to apply most of it before flowering and fruit set, reducing inputs at the end of summer so as not to promote late shoots that do not lignify well before winter.

Phosphorus (P): Its importance skyrockets. It is a key element in flowering, fruit set, and the initial development of the future nut. We increase the dose to 30-40 FU/ha, ensuring its availability at key moments: pre-flowering and post-fruit set.

Potassium (K): We begin to significantly increase the doses. Potassium will be fundamental in the coming years for pistachio filling. In the fourth year, it helps strengthen the tree and improve the quality of the flower buds. We recommend between 80 and 110 FU/ha.
The emergence of microelements
Until now, the microelements present in the soil may have been sufficient. But upon starting the reproductive phase, the demands for certain elements multiply. Foliar analyses are our best allies here to detect deficiencies before they manifest visually.

Zinc (Zn): Absolutely vital. It is involved in the synthesis of auxins, hormones responsible for shoot growth and fruit set. Zinc deficiency causes small leaves, short internodes, and poor fruit set. We recommend preventive foliar applications before flowering.

Boron (B): The other star microelement for production. Essential for pollen germination, pollen tube growth, and therefore, for good fertilization and fruit set. Its deficiency causes massive dropping of flowers and newly set fruits. Like zinc, foliar applications in pre-flowering are the most effective strategy.
Consolidating production: The challenge of alternate bearing (Year 5 and 6)
We have reached the first significant harvest! 🥳 From the fifth or sixth year, depending on the variety and orchard conditions, our trees should give us a production that is already starting to be interesting from the point of view of orchard profitability. The main challenge at this stage is to nutritionally manage alternate bearing, that natural tendency of the pistachio tree to alternate a year of high production (“ON”) with one of low production (“OFF”).
Proper nutrition does not eliminate alternate bearing, but it can significantly mitigate it, achieving more constant productions over the years. The key is to replenish the nutrients exported with the harvest and ensure that the tree has sufficient reserves to form the flower buds for the following year.
Post-harvest nutrition: The great forgotten one
Many farmers cut off irrigation and fertilization right after harvesting. Big mistake! The period from harvest to leaf fall is critical. During these weeks, the tree is translocating nutrients and photoassimilates from the leaves to the branches and roots, creating the reserves it will use for budding and flowering the following spring.
It is essential to carry out a post-harvest “reserve fertilization”.

Nitrogen (N): A supply of low-leaching nitrogen (slow-release ureas or foliar applications of urea at low concentration) helps keep the leaves active for longer and accumulate nitrogen reserves in the form of arginine.

Potassium (K): After harvest, the tree is exhausted of potassium, the main element demanded for pistachio filling. A good post-harvest potassium application is vital to replenish levels.

Zinc (Zn) and Boron (B): A foliar application of zinc and boron after harvest is one of the most effective practices to ensure good flowering and fruit set the following spring.
Fertilization plan in full production (Year 5-7)
The amounts of fertilizer will depend directly on the expected harvest (in “ON” years) and the harvest obtained (to replenish in “OFF” years). As a general reference for an orchard in its sixth year with an expected production of 1,000 kg/ha of dry pistachios, the needs could be:

Nitrogen (N): Between 120 and 150 FU/ha. Split into three key moments: 40% at the beginning of budding, 40% during nut growth, and 20% post-harvest.

Phosphorus (P): Between 40 and 60 FU/ha. Concentrated in the first part of the cycle (budding, flowering, and fruit set).

Potassium (K): The main protagonist. Needs skyrocket! We may need between 150 and 200 FU/ha. Potassium is crucial during the kernel filling phase (July-August). Most of the potassium should be applied from shell hardening until a few weeks before harvest. Fertigation is the ideal method to apply this element progressively and adjusted to the tree’s needs.
The role of Calcium (Ca) and Magnesium (Mg)
We must not forget the mesoelements. Calcium is fundamental for the structure of cell walls, giving firmness to tissues and improving the post-harvest life of the nut. In calcareous soils, like many of those we have on the peninsula, there is usually no deficiency, but there are blocking problems due to high pH. Magnesium is the central atom of the chlorophyll molecule, making it essential for photosynthesis. Its deficiency manifests itself with a characteristic yellowing in older leaves. It is important to monitor the K/Mg balance in the soil, as an excess of potassium can hinder magnesium absorption.
Fertigation vs. Basal and foliar fertilization: Complementary strategies
In the modern management of pistachio orchards, we do not speak of a single fertilization strategy, but of the intelligent combination of several techniques.
Basal dressing: It is done in winter, during vegetative dormancy. It consists of providing the least mobile nutrients, such as phosphorus, potassium, and organic matter, burying them slightly in the drip zone. It is the basis of nutrition for the whole year.
Fertigation: 💧 It is the most efficient technique. It allows us to apply nutrients dissolved in irrigation water, making them directly available to the roots. This gives us almost total control over the tree’s nutrition, allowing us to adjust doses and balances in each phase of the crop. Nitrogen and potassium are the elements best suited to this technique. It requires an initial investment in the irrigation system, but the improvement in efficiency and production quickly pays for it. Foliar fertilization: 🌿 It is a route for rapid and direct supply of nutrients, especially microelements (Zinc, Boron, Iron, Manganese) and to make specific corrections at times of maximum demand or stress for the plant (biostimulants, amino acids). It is not a substitute for soil fertilization, but a highly valuable complement. Zinc and Boron applications in pre-flowering, or potassium applications in the final filling phase, are examples of its enormous usefulness.
Warning signs: Learning to read our trees
Our pistachio trees constantly speak to us through their leaves, shoots, and fruits. Learning to interpret these signals allows us to act before a nutritional deficiency becomes a serious problem.

Generalized pale yellow leaves (chlorosis), especially on older leaves: Lack of Nitrogen.

Leaves with a dull dark green color, sometimes with purplish tones: Possible Phosphorus deficiency.

Burns or necrosis on the edges and tips of older leaves: Classic symptom of Potassium deficiency.

Young yellow leaves with green veins (interveinal chlorosis): The famous iron chlorosis, Iron deficiency, very common in calcareous soils.

Small, mottled leaves with very short internodes (“rosette”): Zinc deficiency.

Flower drop, poor fruit set, deformed fruits: Suspect a Boron deficiency.
Faced with any of these symptoms, definitive confirmation will be given by a foliar analysis. Acting quickly with a specific correction (usually via foliar spray for a faster response) is key to minimizing the impact on production.
This stage, from the third to the seventh year, is undoubtedly one of the most challenging and at the same time rewarding in pistachio cultivation. It requires observation, analysis, planning, and above all, a deep understanding of the tree’s needs at all times.
